Bursaries
The school offers one of the most generous and wide-reaching bursary programmes in the region, supporting around 150 pupils each year with means-tested awards. Bursaries can cover up to 110% of tuition fees and, in some cases, essential extras such as uniform or travel. In the most recent year, the RGS Foundation will distribute £1.4 million in bursary support, with many awards covering 75% or more of fees. Funded through the school and the RGS Foundation, this provision is central to the school’s mission to widen access and open doors to outstanding education. RGS Foundation also benefits from support via the Henry Smith Club, a philanthropic group of donors committed to long-term bursary funding. The school aims to double its bursary impact over the coming decade through its Changing Lives, Building Futures campaign as part of its 350th anniversary Decade of Difference commitment, ensuring children with promise and potential, whatever their background, have the chance to thrive at RGS.
Bursaries are means-tested and awarded based on financial need; a child does not need to hold a scholarship to be eligible. Most bursary holders are supported solely on the basis of financial circumstances, not academic or co-curricular awards.
RGS offers a range of named and targeted bursaries that reflect the school’s commitment to serving local families and recognising individual circumstances. These include:
School Bursary - provided by Reigate Grammar School for any family with a gross annual income below £120,000.
Harrison Scholars – for pupils living in the Borough of Reigate & Banstead provided by Sir Peter Harrison Foundation in conjunction with School Bursary.
NHS Scholars – for children whose parents work in the NHS or care sector provided by RGS Foundation's Changing Lives, Building Futures campaign.
1675 Scholars – for families with gross income below £120,000 provided by RGS Foundation's Changing Lives, Building Futures campaign.
Gershon Scholars – for Sixth Form students intending to pursue science or engineering at university for families with gross income below £120,000 provided by RGS Foundation's Changing Lives, Building Futures campaign.
We Care Bursary – for pupils facing unforeseen or exceptionally difficult personal circumstances provided by RGS Foundation's Changing Lives, Building Futures campaign.
Temporary Bursary – available to current RGS families experiencing a sudden change in financial situation provided by Reigate Grammar School Bursary.
As a general guide, families with a gross annual income below £120,000 may be eligible to apply for a bursary. Awards are assessed individually, taking into account income, outgoings, assets, dependents, and personal circumstances. In cases of particular hardship, the school may also offer support beyond fees, for example, uniform, travel, or extracurricular costs.
