Why DofE matters for girls’ education
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) has long been recognised as a catalyst for confidence, resilience and character and, at Sydenham & Dulwich Girls GDST, it plays a central role in how the school prepares young women to thrive in school and far beyond it.
Empowering girls through challenge and choice
One of the most powerful aspects of the DofE is that it hands ownership to the girls themselves. They choose their activities, set their goals and take responsibility for their progress. This sense of agency is transformative during adolescence, when girls are forming their identities and learning to trust their own judgement.
Through the Physical, Skills and Volunteering sections, pupils discover strengths they didn’t know they had. They learn to persevere, to manage their time, and to take pride in steady, meaningful progress. These are life skills that sit comfortably alongside academic achievement, enriching the whole educational experience.
The expedition - often the most memorable part of the Award - brings all of this learning together. Navigating new environments, working as a team and overcoming setbacks builds a kind of confidence that can’t be taught in a classroom. It helps girls move beyond perfectionism and self-doubt, replacing them with resilience, adaptability and a quiet belief in their own capability.
A wellbeing boost when it matters most
Teenage girls today face unprecedented pressures, and the DofE offers a healthy counterbalance.
- Time outdoors supports mental clarity and reduces stress.
- Physical activity boosts mood and energy.
- Volunteering fosters empathy, purpose and connection.
It’s a structured, positive framework that supports wellbeing as much as it develops character.
At Sydenham & Dulwich Girls, the DofE is woven into its ethos of courage, curiosity and community. It’s not an optional extra — it’s a meaningful part of how the school helps girls grow.
Girls can choose to participate in Bronze from Year 9, Silver from Year 10 and Gold in Sixth Form. At each level, girls feel the benefits of participation:
- Girls lead their own journey. Staff act as mentors, encouraging independence and celebrating each girl’s unique pathway through the Award.
- Training is thorough and empowering. The school's experienced DofE team ensures girls feel prepared, safe and confident, with pastoral support that helps even the most hesitant participants succeed.
- It connects directly to their future. Through the school's innovative Futures Programme, girls learn to articulate the skills they gain — teamwork, initiative, resilience — in interviews, applications and personal statements.
This integrated approach ensures the DofE feels purposeful, relevant and deeply aligned with our vision for girls’ education.
Girls who complete the DofE at Sydenham & Dulwich Girls emerge with a stronger sense of who they are and what they can achieve. They gain independence, confidence and a genuine pride in their accomplishments. These qualities stay with them long after the expedition tents are packed away.
