Rugby School Japan on track to open in September 2023

Rugby School Japan (RSJ), due to open in September 2023, will have the capacity to educate 780 day and boarding students from Year 7 to Year 13.

Tony Darby, former Sub-Warden of St Edward’s School, Oxford, takes up his role as Founding Principal in September 2022. Tony spent 14 years working at Rugby School (2003-2017), leading the Economics and Business Studies Department and becoming the Senior Housemaster.

RSJ’s Deputy Heads (Academic and Pastoral) will be announced in September 2022. Teaching and administrative posts will be advertised in TES in the autumn of 2022. The School is located in Chiba University’s Kashiwanoha campus, 30 minutes from central Tokyo by train, and is within walking distance of Kashiwanoha Park.

Peter Green, Executive Head Master of Rugby School Group, said: “Rugby School Japan will be an authentic interpretation of Rugby School England, respectful of the cultural context of Japan. We understand that boarding and our House system may be unfamiliar concepts. So too our wide range of co-curricular activities and our enthusiasm for sport, especially team sport. We are an unashamedly academic school but we believe that academic qualifications are just one aspect of a properly rounded education, so sport, music and drama are integral, not extras.

“We are delighted at the level of interest already expressed by families living in Japan, especially as they find out about our small class sizes; our approach to learning which encourages creativity, problem solving and critical thinking; and our globally-minded attitude towards education and growing up. Opening in Japan is a very exciting development for us and we look forward to extending our spirit of community to our new sister school.”

Rugby School Japan will be the second international school within Rugby School Group; Rugby School Thailand, which opened in 2017, now has 949 students, aged from three to 18.

Clarence Education Asia (CEA) is Rugby School’s exclusive partner in Japan. Managing Director of CEA Group, Lori  Henderson, said: “Tokyo is the largest metropolis in the world – home to 38 million people. We have worked in very close collaboration with Rugby School England to ensure that Rugby School Japan delivers the highest standard of teaching, accommodation and co-curricular facilities on a site where it will have world-leading academic and research institutions such as Chiba University and The University of Tokyo as neighbours.”
