Rugby Schools Cricketing Stars
Jacob Bethell (18), who is in his last term at Rugby School, has secured a contract at Welsh Fire, a 100-ball cricket side based in Cardiff, representing Glamorgan, Gloucestershire and Somerset, to play in this year’s Hundred cricket competition.
Jacob played for England in the U19s’ cricket World Cup in the West Indies earlier this year. He grew up in Barbados and, aged 13, was offered a sports scholarship at Rugby School. He will be working with World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten and playing with international cricketers Jonny Bairstow and Oli Pope.
Maia Bouchier (23), who attended Rugby School from 2012 – 2016, has been selected to play in the Women’s Hundred, representing the Southern Brave, a 100-ball cricket side based in Southampton, representing Hampshire and Sussex. She was in the squad selected to play for England in the Women’s Ashes which took place in Australia at the beginning of this year.
The Hundred is a newly founded cricket competition which played for the first time last year during the English and Welsh cricket seasons. Headed by Debbie Skene, sport is Rugby School’s biggest department, with 25 activities on offer. Debbie reports that interest in girls’ cricket is ‘through the roof’.
